The State of the Brighton Quiz Scene
Brighton has roughly 75 active pub quizzes run by 36 quizmasters. That count comes from Dean Harrington, who rang round more than 200 pubs before launching the first Brighton Pub Quiz Awards, with the final held at The Mucky Duck on 1 December 2025 and more than 2,500 public votes cast. The city has more quizzes per head than it needs, which keeps standards up and entry fees down.
Most run Tuesday through Thursday, with a decent spread across Monday and Sunday. Friday and Saturday are the only dead nights. Entry is £1 to £3 a head. Teams of up to 6 are standard. Prizes run the full range: a bar tab, a bottle of wine, a round of shots for last place, or a rolling cash jackpot that nobody has cracked for months.
What follows is a day-by-day breakdown of the quizzes worth knowing about. We checked every one of them in September 2026 and found four that had quietly stopped since the spring, so the list is shorter than it was and a good deal more reliable. Brighton’s pub scene rewards exploration beyond quiz night too. Our Best Pubs in Brighton guide will help you find your local.

Monday
Monday is leaner than midweek, but the options are better than they look.
The Lion and Lobster runs a general knowledge quiz at 8pm. £2.50 entry with a £50 jackpot. A solid, no-frills quiz in a busy city centre pub, which means arriving at 7:45pm and hoping.
The Admiral on Elm Grove starts at 8pm. £1 entry. General knowledge. Quiet enough to hear yourself think.
The Park Crescent near The Level does a Monday quiz with a charity element. £1 entry, with prizes including a bottle of Tuaca. Pure Brighton.
King & Queen on Marlborough Place runs a SpeedQuizzing smartphone format from 9pm. £1 entry. James Boyle has been running SpeedQuizzing in Brighton since around 2000, which makes him one of the longest-serving hosts in the city. It’s a student crowd, so it runs in term time.
The Signalman on Ditchling Rise moved its quiz to Monday nights in 2026, with drag performer Veronica von Beaverhausen as host. Expect it to be louder than the average pub quiz. Start time is 8pm.
Caroline of Brunswick on Ditchling Road runs Risky Quizness fortnightly at 7:30pm in the main bar, hosted by Alicia and Tami. The pub’s website still says Sunday but the September dates fall on Mondays. Check the calendar on their site before you set off.
The Robin Hood in Norfolk Square hosts a music quiz on the first Monday of each month. Up to £150 in prizes. Mark Hodges runs it, and dates are booked through to summer 2027.
Tuesday
Still the busiest night for pub quizzes in Brighton. Six weekly quizzes plus a couple of fortnightly and monthly ones.

The Black Dove on St James’s Street has the most distinctive format: teams pick their own rounds from a selection of niche topics. 8pm start, £1 entry (some listings say £2, so bring a couple of quid), £50 jackpot, teams of up to 6. Good beer list.
The Lord Nelson Inn on Trafalgar Street is one of the longest-running Tuesday quizzes. General knowledge from 8pm. £2 entry. A £20 to £50 bar tab for the winners.
The Lewes Road Inn is a Quiz Actually venue, and the quiz moved to Tuesdays this year. Doors from 7:30pm, questions from 8pm, done by 10:15pm. Five rounds, screen and verbal, the same format Quiz Actually runs everywhere.
The Westbourne in Hove is the Pub Quiz Company’s Tuesday night. 7:30pm start. £2 entry plus £1 for the Jukebox Bingo round. Teams of up to 7. Cash for first, wine further down the table.
The Wick Inn in Palmeira Square starts from 8pm. £1 entry, £10 jackpot, teams of up to 5. A low-key Hove option where nobody takes it too seriously.
Bar Medusa on Preston Street runs a fortnightly 7:30pm quiz. £1 entry. General knowledge.
Fiddler’s Elbow on Boyces Street does a Tuesday quiz for £1 with an all-night happy hour running alongside it. You can guess how the later rounds go.
UnBarred Brewery & Taproom on Elder Place hosts a monthly quiz on the third Tuesday at 7:30pm. £2 entry, 20% off drinks for players, and Leanne Shorley asking the questions.
Wednesday
Fewer quizzes, but this is where the two biggest jackpots in the city live.

The Mucky Duck on Manchester Street hosts Quiz Face at 8pm, run by Dean Harrington, the person who created the Brighton Pub Quiz Awards. The format is deliberately creative: expect drawing rounds, plasticine modelling, and questions that reward lateral thinking as much as knowledge. Entry is £2 (£1 for NHS workers). The rolling jackpot can reach £1,000. Small pub. Arrive early.

North Laine Brewhouse is hosted by Quizzy with Izzy from 7:30pm. Four rounds with a beer tasting and a dress-up round woven in. £2 entry. The rolling jackpot has ranged between £100 and £1,600, with a £50 bar tab for the night’s winners regardless. This is one of Brighton’s most popular quiz nights and it gets packed. Be in by 7pm if you want a table.
The Hope & Ruin on Queens Road hosts Boogaloo Stu’s Big Quiffy Quiz on the first and third Wednesday of the month at 8pm. £2.50 entry. Stu ran this quiz at The Marlborough for years and it has kept the same mix of general knowledge and showing off.
Open House on Springfield Road, up by Preston Park, has Boogaloo Stu every Wednesday. A neighbourhood pub quiz in a pub that does neighbourhood well.
Thursday
The other big night. Thursday quizzes are more competitive than Tuesday, and the money is bigger.

Camelford Arms in Kemptown is the headline. The pub calls it the £300 Thursday Quiz, and that is the top prize in cash. £1 entry. The pub has a long habit of putting sandwiches out on the bar mid-quiz and buying the last-placed team a round of shots. A Kemptown institution.
The Fitz Regent on Castle Square combines music and general knowledge rounds from 8pm. £2.50 entry, £50 cash for the winners, a bottle of wine for the runners-up. Central, so handy for a pre-quiz dinner.
The Hartington in Hanover is a proper local’s quiz. £2 entry with a cash rollover jackpot that builds week on week.
The Fiveways on Ditchling Road is James Boyle’s other SpeedQuizzing residency. 8:30pm start, £3 entry (contactless, for once), teams of up to 6, over-18s only.
The George Payne in Hove has Boogaloo Stu on the first and third Thursday of the month at 7:30pm.
Palmeira in Hove starts at 8:30pm. £2.50 entry, £50 jackpot.
Sunday
A slower pace. Sunday quizzes tend to start earlier and feel more relaxed.

The Bear Inn on Lewes Road is a Pub Quiz Company venue, 7:30pm until about 10:15pm. General knowledge rounds plus Jukebox Bingo. Teams of up to 7. Entry is £1 plus £1 for the bingo. Cash for first place, a bottle of wine for second-to-last, and free pizza for everyone. The rollover jackpot is separate. A proper Sunday evening pub quiz.
The Prince George on Trafalgar Street runs a weekly Sunday quiz with a cash rollover. £1 entry. The kitchen is now run by the T@ vegan team, so eat before the questions start.
Palmeira in Hove runs a second quiz on Sunday evenings at 7:30pm. £2.50 entry, £50 jackpot.
The Ancient Mariner in Westbourne, Hove, hosts Quizzy McQuizface on the last Sunday of the month at 7pm. Pop culture questions, £2 entry, teams of up to 6, a £50 bar tab for the winners.
Monthly and Themed Quizzes
Several Brighton pubs run themed quiz specials that are worth planning around.
The Walrus on Ship Street runs Tusk Club, a themed quiz roughly monthly on Wednesdays with doors at 6pm. Autumn 2026 covers Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Office, Buffy and a Halloween special. Around £5 a head, teams of up to 6, fancy dress encouraged and Leanne Shorley hosting.
Fountain Head in North Laine hosts a monthly themed quiz. £3 entry, cash prizes, costumes welcome. The theme is announced on the pub’s socials a few weeks ahead.
The Yellow Book on York Place hosts The Pub Quiz at the End of the World on the third Monday of each month, 7:30pm to 10pm. £1 entry on the door. General knowledge with a post-apocalyptic theme, and a maximum of 5 per team.
World’s End on London Road has a quiz every other Monday at 8pm, hosted by Suzy. It doesn’t appear on the pub’s website, so ask at the bar or check their socials first.
Brighton Insider tip: If you want to quiz-hop, Wednesday is the night to do it. Start at North Laine Brewhouse at 7:30pm, and if the jackpot question beats you, The Mucky Duck’s Quiz Face is a twelve-minute walk east and doesn’t get going until 8pm.
The Operators
Brighton’s quiz scene is organised around a handful of professional operators who run multiple weekly residencies.
Quiz Actually has been going for more than 11 years and has run over 4,000 quizzes. The format is standardised: five rounds, screen and verbal, 8pm to about 10:15pm. In Brighton it now runs Good Companions in Seven Dials and The Lewes Road Inn, both on Tuesdays, plus The Railway Inn in Portslade on Mondays. The original venue was The Ancient Mariner in Westbourne.
The Pub Quiz Company runs The Bear Inn on Sundays and The Westbourne on Tuesdays. Jukebox Bingo is the add-on. Maximum 7 per team.
SpeedQuizzing / James Boyle runs smartphone-based quizzes at King & Queen (Monday) and The Fiveways (Thursday). No pen and paper. Everything goes through an app.
Quiz Face / Dean Harrington hosts at The Mucky Duck every Wednesday. He created the Brighton Pub Quiz Awards and has been running creative quizzes for about a decade.
Quizzy with Izzy hosts at North Laine Brewhouse every Wednesday. Beer tasting, dress-up rounds, and the biggest rolling jackpot in the city.
Boogaloo Stu covers The Hope & Ruin and The George Payne fortnightly and Open House weekly. Classic general knowledge with a cabaret edge.
Leanne Shorley writes the themed quizzes at The Walrus and the monthly one at UnBarred. She also hosts in Worthing, if you’re that keen.
Practical Tips
Arrive early: Popular quizzes fill up 15 to 30 minutes before the start. The Mucky Duck, North Laine Brewhouse, and Camelford Arms are the worst for late arrivals.
Start times: Most quizzes start at 8pm. North Laine Brewhouse and The Bear Inn go at 7:30pm, King & Queen not until 9pm, and The Walrus opens its doors at 6pm for the themed nights.
Bring cash: Entry fees are almost always collected in cash. The Fiveways is the rare one that takes contactless. Some venues are card-only for drinks but cash for quiz entry.
Team sizes: Standard maximum is 6. The Pub Quiz Company allows 7. The Yellow Book and The Wick Inn cap you at 5. Turning up as a pair is fine at most quizzes. You just accept the handicap.
Don’t cheat: Quizmasters notice phones. Some venues use phone jammers during the quiz. Get caught and you’re disqualified.
Best nights: Tuesday and Thursday have the most options. Wednesday has the biggest prizes. If you want a pint in the sun first, Best Beer Gardens in Brighton has the spots with outdoor space.
Schedules change: Quizzes skip bank holidays, change nights, and stop altogether without telling anyone. Four of the quizzes in the March version of this guide had gone by September. Check the venue’s social media in the week you plan to go. If you’re staying out afterwards, Late-Night Food in Brighton covers what’s still open.
