737 upcoming theatre & dance events in Brighton & Hove
The Theatre Royal Brighton has been putting on shows since 1807. West End tours pass through regularly. You can see the same production running in London, often the same week, for half the price. The Attenborough Centre does the opposite end of the spectrum. Experimental, contemporary, the kind of work that makes you think or confuses you completely. Sometimes both.
The Old Market in Hove programmes well across everything. Fringe theatre, dance, spoken word, comedy. Small enough to feel intimate, big enough to pull decent acts. Brighton Dome handles the larger-scale stuff — dance companies, orchestral performances, national tours.
During Brighton Fringe, the theatre programme explodes. Pub rooms, shipping containers, car parks, churches. If it has four walls and a floor, someone's doing a one-person show in it. The quality varies wildly but the best stuff is as good as anything you'd see in Edinburgh.
Brighton attracts theatre makers who want to try things. The proximity to London helps. Lots of actors and directors live here and commute, which means preview performances, workshop runs, and try-out shows pop up regularly. It's a good city to see things early.
